Try AVG-Free, or just avoid using the beta online. It is beta code so you MUST EXPECT problems.
Your personal experience may vary from others with any software on this beta.

LOL firstly, forget using my name because you'll never be able to spell it properly - just call it VistaBase Andre :o) And secondly... I knew those permalinks would be useful someday ;o)

There are a few - my list needs updating but I'll kick start a new thread in a minute. For the meantime, check some of these (the later builds are more likely to work) http://www.vistabase.co.uk/welcome.php?subcats/applications/antivirus

Since AVG Free is now longer compatible, I installed Avast 4.0 Free. Just take a "Custom" install, and select only the "Standard Shield". Also helps to trim back logging level and a few other Program options. Works fine - A little performance penalty, but not bad.

down south with adelphia, they have "freedom" as there antivirus, firewall, etc. found out tonight they are not compatible with Vista. -- don

Trend Micro has an Internet Security Suite available for free until Oct 31st which should be around when the RC1 release comes out. http://www.trendbeta.com -- If at first you do succeed, try not to look astonished!

The "free" version of Avast (4.7) works well.... trend firewall is useless, you can do everything it does with Vista's and have no extra overhead on resources and ram.

errr no overhead from the resources used by both firewall and av from trend that is... avast will use some but it's fairly light. Much more so than trend.

What is everyone doing about Antivirus protection? My XP was loaded with Norton's software. Under Vista I can not uninstall. Keeps telling me they'll let me know when it will work.
I cannot install AVG, Bit Defender, EzArmor without uninstalling Nortons and of course Norton's doesn't work. Seems that MS is pushing pretty hard to sell Trend Micro....

The problem is the incompatible antivirus you left on the system during the upgrade. Incompatible software and hardware should have been removed first. The issue has little if anything to do with whatever Microsoft may be "pushing". Contact Norton for a solution. Or perhaps a Clean Installation is needed at this point.
Whatever anti virus you use, be sure it is compatible with Windows Vista before attempting installation. Many such as Norton have a Beta for Vista since the Norton released products are mostly incompatible.
I use: http://www.my-etrust.com/Microsoft/vista/default.aspx
Remember Vista is Beta and as a Beta should be used accordingly.

As Jupiter said, this isn't a matter of a Microsoft endorsement... more like a sloppy upgrade routine. Of course, "sloppy" and "upgrade" are always used together in reference to operating systems. I wonder why?
Personally, I'd let the official Vista beta team deal with all the upgrade headaches. I prefer the dual boot option right now. I keep XP just in case Vista backs me into a compatibility nightmere.

I downloaded Trend Micro PC-cillin and got nothing but problems. Keeps saying it's out of date but won't let you update saying it does not support this action. I have since tried to uninstall it. I got some of it uninstalled but on installation it installed a "Network adapter" Common Firewall Miniport #3 that refuses to be deleted telling me Windows won't delete it because my PC may not start without it. Do you or anyone else know how to completly remove this from my PC? Any help would be gratful. Thanks, Randy

I am using Avast but wondered if the web active scan is causing problems with IE7. IE7 was generating error reports on open and if on a forum. I paused the active webpage scan until I found this post. Otherwise Avast is working.

Randy,
I had the same problem with my install. I had upgraded from XP and I was forced to go into the registry to delete some of the files for this miniport (under the trend micro name). After I deleted as many files I could that had anything to do with Pc-cillin I was able to delete the port. I still had many problems with this software and ASVAST! casued driver conflicts. Today I did a clean install and peculiarly enough, like a dumba _ _ I tried Pc-cillin 14.55 again. It did not work for updates too. There obviuosly is a setting in the services that is blocking it. Off to experiment further. GOOD LUCK!
